SCABIES remains a dominant public health threat in Fiji, with data revealing the infectious skin disease is particularly ravaging the nation’s youngest demographic.
Recent studies showed across medical facilities and general outpatient clinics have confirmed a staggering 30% prevalence rate.
According to renowned Dermatologist Dr Metuisela Tuicakau, these figures underscore a persistent and troubling trend.
“We have noted the continuous scabies outbreak over the years,” Dr Tuicakau stated, emphasizing that the disease has become a focus in local health centres rather than a passing wave.
However, the data-driven approach to the crisis is finally providing medical teams with the ammo needed to fight back.
Dr Tuicakau noted that the crucial studies conducted previously played a vital role in securing specialised medication.
“We are thankful for the studies that I have mentioned that we have ivermectin tablets for the treatment and management of scabies,” Dr Tuicakau said.
The availability of Ivermectin tablets marks a significant turning point in clinical management, offering a more aggressive response to a disease, says Dr Tuicakau
While the Ministry of Health continues to monitor the outbreak, health officials urge parents to remain vigilant for symptoms in children to curb the 30 per cent infection rate.
