Severe thunderstorm with rain warning issued for parts of Viti Levu

Listen to this article:

A severe thunderstorm warning for heavy rainfall is now in force for the northeastern parts and interior of Viti Levu, covering areas from Ba through Rakiraki to Korovou.

According to the weather bulletin, a moist south to southeast wind flow is prevailing over Fiji.

Combined with daytime heating, this has led to the development of thunderstorms over inland areas of Viti Levu, which are expected to become severe and spread to the northeastern parts of the island.

Forecasters warn that severe thunderstorms may produce intense heavy rainfall, which could result in flash flooding in low-lying areas within the next few hours.

The public is also advised to expect frequent and dangerous lightning strikes.

Members of the public are urged to take precautionary measures, including keeping clear of flooded creeks and drains, and avoiding walking, cycling or driving through floodwaters. People are also advised to unplug electrical appliances if lightning is present, avoid sheltering under trees, and remain indoors away from windows.

Thunderstorm activity accompanied by heavy rainfall and lightning is expected to continue until late afternoon or evening.

Authorities caution that, due to uncertainty in thunderstorm movement and development, not all areas may be affected, and impacts may vary from place to place.
