A TOTAL of 84 teams are set to take the field in the Vodafone Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League (FSSLR) 2026 season, promising a highly competitive and action-packed tournament across Fiji’s Southeastern and Western Zones.

Naisa Cama Toko, president of the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League, highlighted the significant growth and fresh faces joining the competition this year.

“We have 56 teams from 29 schools in the Southeastern Zone and 29 teams from 19 schools in the Western Zone,” he said.

“This season, we welcome two new schools from Levuka, St John’s College Cawaci and Levuka Public School, while Naiyala Secondary School is making a return after a three-year hiatus. Also making a comeback are the sleeping giants Ratu Navula in the West, adding further excitement and competitiveness.”

The competition continues to feature three age groups: Under 15, Under 17, and Under 19.

However, Toko expressed strong ambitions to expand beyond these categories.

“Growth is our priority, but it depends on funding and timing,” he explained.

“We’re seeking support from the Fiji National Rugby League and the Ministry of Sports to help us widen the reach of the game. Rugby league is thriving here, with many young talents being scouted overseas, so investing in the sport is vital.”

Vodafone Fiji remains the backbone of the league’s success, providing $200,000 in annual sponsorship.

“For two decades, Vodafone has been the lifeblood of our association,” Toko acknowledged.

“Their continued support is instrumental in sustaining and growing the competition.”

The 2026 season kicks off this Saturday at the Saint Marcellin primary school grounds for the Southeastern Zone, with other matches scheduled across Sigatoka, Lautoka Nadi, and Ra in the West.

The tournament will run through several rounds, culminating in national quarter-finals in Suva, semi-finals in Lautoka, and the grand final at Churchill Park in Lautoka.

Toko called on fans and communities to get behind the teams.

“We urge everyone to come out in numbers, support our players, and enjoy the thrilling rugby league action,” he said.

“Your support, both moral and financial, is crucial to the success and growth of this wonderful sport.”

With a record number of teams and exciting new additions, the Vodafone Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League 2026 season is poised to be one of the most memorable yet.
