President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu has urged leaders, political supporters, and citizens to uphold integrity and respect in the lead-up to elections, emphasising that democracy depends on more than just casting votes.
“Elections must be a context of ideas and vision, and never of fear of division. The strength of our democracy lies not only in the ballot, but in the conduct of leaders and citizens alike, not only during elections but also in the lead up to and after the elections,” Ratu Naiqama said.
He said to secure democracy, leaders and political supporters must continue to respect of the rule of law.
“I therefore, call upon all who seek public office and all who participate in public discourse, in particular supporters of political parties and candidates, to uphold the high standards of integrity, and respect for our multicultural society.”
