Economic recovery, the rising cost of living and inclusive growth were key themes highlighted by President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu as he opened the 2026 session of Parliament yesterday.
Addressing Members of Parliament, the President said Fiji continued to navigate global uncertainties while working to ensure that economic gains translate into meaningful improvements for households.
“At home, we continue our recovery from the recent global shocks, while confronting the rising cost of living and to ensure that economic growth translate into tangible improvements in household wellbeing,” Ratu Naiqama said.
“The household income and expenditure survey reports that prior to the pandemic, approximately one part of our population lived below the poverty line, with another 25 per cent facing hardship, standing just above the poverty line in both the urban and rural communities.”
He said these findings reinforced the importance of formulating just roles and policies that were inclusive and well targeted, and grounded in evidence.
“The Government’s program 2026 and beyond, seeks not only to grow the economy, in particular, growth must create decent work, protect the vulnerable and invest in the capabilities of our people.
“In the formulation of programs and policies, the government will be guided by three principles — unity and diversity, that is ensuring that every citizen, regardless of background or place of residence, shares in national progress; the sustainability and resilience that is protecting our people, the economy, the environment for the present and future generations; and thirdly, the integrity and good governance, strengthening trust in public institutions and public leadership.”
Ratu Naiqama said this principle will inform the formation oblation of legislation, budgeted decisions, institutional reform and public policy across all sectors, and will serve as the compass for national decision making in the years ahead.
