A call has been made for the establishment of a dedicated court to handle drug offences as concerns mount over the growing impact of narcotics on Fijian communities.

Vuya district representative Watisoni Bola told the consultation team on the proposed Narcotics Bill at Naulumatua House in Bua that drug-related cases require urgency and seriousness.

He said such a court would ensure cases were handled efficiently and without unnecessary delays.

Mr Bola also emphasised the importance of consistency in sentencing.

“There must be the same judgment for the same offences — this will promote fairness, transparency and equality before the law,” he said.

He warned that communities were bearing the brunt of rising drug cases, with families deeply affected by addiction and criminal activity.

While calling for firm action against traffickers and users, he said rehabilitation must remain part of the solution, especially for those struggling with substance abuse.

A specialised drug court, Mr Bola said, would not only streamline cases and reduce backlogs but also send a strong message that drug-related offences would not be tolerated.
