For more than three decades, Georgina Ledua’s unmistakable “heavy, strong and husky” voice has echoed through hotel lounges, concert halls and village gatherings across Fiji and beyond.

Now, as she prepares to celebrate her 55th birthday this year, the legendary vocalist says retirement is nowhere in sight.

“I do not think I will retire from singing,” she said.

“I intend to continue singing because it is good for me and beneficial for my health. I do not see myself stopping anytime soon.”

From Nayau to the national stage

Ledua hails from Liku Village in Nayau, Lau, with maternal links to Cawaru in Udu, Macuata. A mother of five – four boys and one girl, she is also a proud grandmother of five, with another grandchild on the way.

Family has remained central to her journey, grounding a career that began in 1991, shortly after she left school.

“It was not an easy journey,” she recalls.

“Success requires determination and hard work. For me, it was never about fame or being in the spotlight. My goal was to work hard, sing, and become a professional artist.”

Her first album followed in 1995, after years of performing in hotels and other venues. Her most recent album was released in 2000, but Ledua is not content to let her earlier work gather dust.

Revisiting the classics

The singer is now gathering some of her most popular songs with the intention of re-recording them for a new generation.

“If I re-record some of my old songs, I may use small portions of the original recordings while changing the sound and tone, rather than using them entirely,” she explains.

On the role of modern technology, including artificial intelligence, she takes a measured view.

“I believe artificial intelligence can be useful; what matters is how it is utilised and applied.”

It is a pragmatic stance from an artist who has witnessed the industry’s transformation from cassette tapes to digital streaming – and who understands the need to evolve while remaining authentic.

A working artist at 55

Far from slowing down, Ledua continues to perform regularly at the Suva Bowling Club every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. In between, she is booked for corporate functions, birthdays and weddings – with her calendar already filling up for the coming months.

Her longevity speaks not only to her vocal power, but also to her discipline. Raising five children while pursuing a music career was not without its trials.

“Raising children while pursuing music also presented challenges, but my love for music kept me going,” she said.

Two of her children have followed in her footsteps, Pauliasi now singing in Sydney, Australia, and Teki in New Zealand.

“I feel blessed,” she said, crediting strong family support as essential in sustaining a career in entertainment.

Music with a message

Beyond performance, Ledua believes music must serve a higher purpose – particularly in confronting social challenges.

“Today, drugs are affecting many families,” she said.

“Musicians should work together to create awareness by writing songs that address youth issues and the dangers of drugs entering families.”

She envisions a united front among Fijian artists, drawing inspiration from the collaborative spirit of global charity recordings of the past.

“There is much we can do collectively,” she said.

“Musicians in Fiji could unite to write songs addressing youth and drug-related challenges, which are affecting nearly every family.”

Guarding the spotlight

Ledua is candid about the pressures of public life, especially in the age of social media.

“Moving from being an ordinary singer to becoming someone widely recognised brings different challenges,” she said.

“You must be careful about what you say on social media and how you conduct yourself, as people are constantly watching.”

Her advice to aspiring musicians centers on the values of humility and faith.

“Be honest with yourselves, work hard, and always put God first in your lives. Doing so will take you a long way.”
