A man who attempted to beat early morning traffic and nearly struck a police officer on point duty is now facing an additional charge of alleged bribery after a $5 note was reportedly offered to the officer.
Police said the incident occurred yesterday morning when the driver failed to stop at the Matanikorovatu traffic lights and almost caused an accident that could have injured the officer on duty.
The vehicle was later stopped by the same officer, who asked the driver to produce his driver’s licence.
Police allege the suspect handed over his licence with a $5 note folded underneath, urging the officer to accept the money.
The man was arrested and taken into custody. Investigations into the incident are continuing.
