Late Alifereti Dere – SUPPLIED

The Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL) is mourning the passing of Mr Alivereti Dere, describing him as a pioneer and true legend of rugby league in Fiji.

In a statement, FNRL said Mr Dere’s contribution to the establishment and growth of the sport in the country would forever remain part of its history.

The organisation acknowledged his vision of creating overseas pathways for Fijian players and expanding opportunities for future generations — a direction that continues to shape the game today.

“His legacy will continue to inspire players, administrators and our entire rugby league vuvale,” the statement read.

FNRL extended heartfelt condolences to the Dere family, saying the rugby league community grieves together as one family during this time of sorrow.

Former players, club members, officials, stakeholders and supporters have been invited to attend a meeting at 5pm on Friday at the FNRL headquarters to discuss funeral arrangements for the late Mr Dere.

As a mark of respect, all FNRL development programs and activities will be placed on hold until after his final burial.
