A new police post on Denarau in Nadi was commissioned this week to strengthen security and deter criminal activity in one of the country’s key tourism hubs.

The facility was funded by the Denarau Corporation Ltd to support police operations and enhance the safety of tourists, residents and businesses on the island.

Speaking at the event, Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu said the new post would boost police visibility and strengthen the Tourism Police Unit, particularly in areas with high visitor numbers.

“With tourism being one of the country’s leading revenue earners, our focus is to strengthen our tourism policing capabilities to support the safety and security of visitors,” he said.

He thanked Denarau Corporation Ltd, its directors, management and hoteliers for their support, adding that discussions to increase police presence on the island had been ongoing.

Denarau Corporation Ltd general manager Nesbitt Hazelman said the establishment of police presence was necessary given Denarau’s economic significance.

“Denarau is a key driver of the tourism industry and contributes significantly to the Fijian economy,” Mr Hazelman said.

He said the corporation viewed the police post as both a deterrent to crime and an important assurance for investors, residents and visitors.

“We have many investors and residents who have made significant investments on the island, and it is important they feel safe and have access to police assistance when needed.”

Mr Hazelman said the police had been provided with the necessary facilities and equipment to operate effectively on the island, adding that a strong police presence would support hoteliers, businesses and residents in maintaining a safe environment.
