POLICE Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu says while criminal activities remain high, limited funding and resources continue to pose challenges for police operations.
Speaking during the opening of the Denarau Police Post in Nadi this week, Mr Tudravu said crime prevention must be a shared responsibility between authorities, communities, and the private sector.
“We have a lot of criminal activities, but it seems we do not have the money and funds,” he said, adding that the Government also faces competing priorities for resources.
“At least we can have a joint effort in our bid to curb crime here in Fiji.”
Mr Tudravu commended Denarau Corporation Ltd for funding a new police post, acknowledging the importance of public-private partnerships in supporting policing efforts.
He said the initiative demonstrated shared responsibility rather than blame being placed solely on police.
“It’s a win-win situation. They get a return on investment through the service we provide.”
He hopes similar initiatives could be extended to other areas.
The commissioner said the decision to establish police presence on Denarau followed reports of criminal and drug-related activities linked to businesses in the area.
He believes the post will act as a deterrent to those attempting to use the island as a criminal hub.
A dedicated tourist police unit will be stationed at the Denarau Police Post, providing 24-hour service.
