A severe thunderstorm warning for heavy rainfall is now in force for the western half and interior of Viti Levu, including areas from Navua through Sigatoka to Nadi, Lautoka and Ba, as well as interior Ba and Ra, and interior Nadroga and Navosa.
The warning follows the development of thunderstorms over the interior of Viti Levu, which forecasters say are expected to intensify and spread westward.
Authorities warn the system has the potential to produce intense rainfall over affected areas within the next few hours.
Severe thunderstorms may bring heavy downpours capable of triggering flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas. Frequent and dangerous lightning strikes are also expected.
Members of the public are advised to keep clear of flooded creeks and drains and avoid walking, cycling or driving through floodwaters.
Thunderstorm activity with intense rainfall and lightning may continue until late afternoon or evening.
However, officials note that due to uncertainty in thunderstorm movement and development, not all areas may be affected, and impacts may vary from place to place.
