A heavy rain alert has been issued for the entire Fiji group as a trough of low pressure is expected to bring showers, thunderstorms and possible flooding over the coming days.

The National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi issued the alert today, warning that cloud and showers currently affecting the eastern parts of the country are expected to gradually spread across Fiji.

Weather officials say occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms are forecast over eastern Viti Levu, including the Greater Suva to Nausori-Tailevu North corridor, Interior Ra, Naitasiri, Serua-Namosi, Interior Nadroga/Navosa, Northern Bua, Eastern Macuata, Cakaudrove, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands.

The weather office is forecasting that occasional rain, along with a few thunderstorms and isolated heavy downpours, will gradually develop over most parts of the country from tomorrow.

Authorities have also warned of possible impacts including flash flooding in flood-prone low-lying settlements and communities, businesses and Irish crossings.

Surface flooding is also expected in urban areas with poor drainage, which could lead to traffic disruptions.
