Police investigations are continuing into the drowning of five-year-old Australian tourist Lilly Wal at Biausevu Waterfall last month.
Director of the Criminal Investigation Department Serupepeli Neiko said the child’s family had been staying at a Coral Coast hotel and visited the village as part of a guided tour.
“They came over to the village, and there was a tour guide provided to lead the group,” Mr Neiko said.
“Investigations are still ongoing, and we have not come to any conclusion yet.”
The tragedy has drawn international attention, with the family calling for greater accountability and improved safety standards for tourist activities.
In an emotional social media post, Lilly’s cousin Chiara Subek accused tour operators and authorities of a “complete failure in duty of care”.
“They were taken up regardless, with no preparation, no proper guidance, no clear safety protocols,” Ms Subek said.
She also criticised the response following the incident, alleging a lack of compassion and accountability from local leaders and police, as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death continue.
