Government ministers have publicly questioned what happened to large quantities of cocaine believed to have entered Fiji during the previous administration, suggesting drugs may have gone unaccounted for before the current coalition came to office.
Minister for Defence Pio Tikoduadua raised the issue in a social media post, referring to reports of cocaine washing up on Fiji’s shores in 2018.
“No blame game, just facts. Cocaine used to wash up on shores as per this story from 2018,” Mr Tikoduadua wrote.
“The question is: if individual bricks were washing up then, where did the rest of it go?”
He said the Coalition Government was now intensifying enforcement efforts and working closely with regional and international partners.
“That is why all the significant drug busts are happening when the coalition came into office, and we are pledging to do even more,” he said.
The post drew criticism from a social media user, who questioned whether the minister had read the original report properly.
In response, Minister for Foreign Affairs Sakiasi Ditoka joined the exchange, pointing directly to the period when the cocaine discoveries were first reported.
“That happened in 2018!” Mr Ditoka replied.
“And yes, ask your FijiFirst saviours where they took the rest of the cocaine to?”
