CORPORAL Punishment is not the answer for our children of this day and age, according to Educator Atelini Bai.
Speaking at the Education Bill public consultation in Lautoka yesterday Ms Bai said there was a need to consider restorative justice.
“I say this with a lot of conviction. I was raised with corporal punishment,” she said.
“I taught in schools that had corporal punishment in the early 2000s, 1999. However, I was also in an environment that put forth the idea, and you may see this of restorative justice from 2002 to 2013. I was in that environment whereby corporal punishment was never ever used and a huge portion of those students have done very well.”
Ms Bai questioned the Standing Committee on Justice, Law and Human Rights on what the administration was doing to children who were teenage parents.
“I believe this is where we have issues, and may I say there are alternatives to corporal punishment. Please let us look at restorative justice.”
