LOCAL American football enthusiasts were treated to a Super Bowl watch party hosted by the US Embassy at the Damodar Cinemas, Damodar City Centre in Suva yesterday.

They watched live the 60th edition of the Super Bowl, where the Seattle Seahawks won 29-13 over the New England Patriots at the Levi’s Stadium in San Francisco, California.

Addressing the watch party, the embassy’s chargĂ© d’Affaires, John Degory, said the event celebrated the shared values of both cultures.

The screening was also attended by members of the diplomatic community, adding to the large turnout by members of the public and fans.

All in attendance were treated to seeing the match broadcasted live on the silver screen, free pizza handed out and a lucky draw prize giveaway such as American footballs.

This is the first time the US Embassy Suva has hosted the event, in line with the Public Private Partnership signed between the US Department of State and the National Football League (NFL).

The sporting body aims to spread the reach of the sport to new audiences worldwide in the path towards driving tourism and engagement with foreign audiences.

In a press statement, the embassy says the NFL also promotes American culture and the values of integrity, fair play and mutual respect.

Meanwhile, the embassy is also celebrating the “Decade of Sport in America” which began in 2024, to highlight the major global sporting events taking place in the land of the Star Spangled Banner.
