THE Government has formally submitted Fiji’s expression of interest to host the upcoming pre-COP negotiations, with discussions now moving to the ministerial level among Pacific leaders.

Permanent secretary for the Environment and Climate Change Dr Sivendra Michael confirmed the process was still in its early stages and subject to regional decision-making.

“Right now, it’s at the expression of interest stage,” Dr Michael said.

He said Fiji’s submission was made through the Office of the Prime Minister and that further clarity would emerge following consultations among Pacific ministers.

“All I can openly declare is that Fiji has submitted its expression of interest through the Office of the Prime Minister and we are awaiting the ministerial negotiations on which Pacific country will host the pre-COP.”

Dr Michael said the decision followed an agreement reached at the global climate talks.

“It was agreed at COP30 that a Pacific island nation will be hosting the pre-COP.”

However, he said the final arrangements, including the host country and format of the meeting, would be determined collectively by regional leaders.

“What those arrangements would look like will be only determined through the PIFS leadership process.”

Pre-COP meetings are held ahead of the annual Conference Of the Parties and play a key role in shaping negotiating positions and priorities before formal climate talks begin.
