WHAT began as a selfless act of sharing a rugby boot with a fellow player has turned into a moment 19-year-old Viliame Waqalevu will always remember.
Fresh out of high school, the Bouma, Taveuni native is featuring for the Dominion Brothers under-21 side at the 17th Fiji Bitter Savusavu 7s tournament at Ganilau Park, carrying not only his rugby ability but also a kind heart onto the field.
Waqalevu described competing at the Fiji Bitter Savusavu 7s as a valuable learning experience, especially as it is his first appearance at the tournament.
He said he relishes the challenge of facing strong opposition as it tests and improves his skills.
One of those challenges came off the field when he was seen sharing his rugby boot with a fellow player, from another team — a moment that went viral online on February 5.
“I’ve known him since our YMCA days, that’s why we’re so close,” Waqalevu said.
“We used to share bus cards, food and even clothes at times.”
That simple act of generosity has since been rewarded.
On February 6, Waqalevu was gifted a size nine rugby boot by a renowned sports photographer, Pita Simpson yesterday, allowing the young forward to continue his tournament without worry as the Savusavu 7s continues at Ganilau Park.
Waqalevu, who plays in the forwards, began his rugby journey at a young age.
“I used to play kaji rugby and when I came to Nasinu Secondary School, I continued playing,” he said.
“I was also part of the Deans final and I’ve just continued playing rugby until now.”
The eldest of six siblings, Waqalevu said growing up in a humble household helped shape his character and values.
“My family is my biggest support system and because of their love and teachings I’m able to play and be part of the team,” he said.
“My mother is a teacher and my father is a farmer, and I’m very grateful for them.”
