CONCERNS have been raised after oil and fuel leaks from buses have started staining the terminal tarmac of the upgraded Lautoka bus station, just a week after its opening.

Lautoka City Council’s (LCC) head of services Shalend Singh told this newspaper yesterday the council is taking the issue seriously and warned that buses found leaking oil may soon be restricted from entering the terminal.

“The Land Transport Authority has also assured us it will look into the matter by issuing defect notices,” Mr Singh said.

“Buses will be put off the road if they fail to comply with these notices.”

Mr Singh said the council had already implemented several measures to address the issue, including:

n Awareness campaigns and circular distribution, conducted two months before the station’s opening to give bus companies ample time to fix oil leakages;

n meetings with bus companies and the LTA to discuss the concerns and request repairs; and

n daily litter enforcement, with 628 fines issued in 2025; all fines had been paid, but the problem persisted.

He noted that the $40 fine has not been enough to compel bus operators to properly maintain their vehicles.

“Litter prevention officers are at the bus station from 6am and will continue issuing fines until 7pm,” he said.
