THE Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s side has taken a close look at their performance in the recent Singapore tournament and is determined to make significant improvements in their defense for the upcoming tournament in Perth.
Head coach Richie Walker spoke to the media from Perth, emphasising the team’s focus on enhancing their defensive capabilities.
Walker acknowledged the areas that require attention and stressed the importance of converting their performances into victories by ensuring they come out on top on the scoreboard.
He mentioned the team’s need to sustain consistency and stick to their defensive strategies and game plan to tackle the tough competition they will face in Perth.
“Our main aim is to keep the consistency with the players, we will be looking at tough pool also in Perth, we just need to stick to our defence and game plan,” said Walker.
Despite the room for improvement, Walker expressed satisfaction with the team’s efforts, particularly in the Dubai and Cape Town tournaments.
He commended them for playing good rugby and highlighted their ability to push forward in attack and force their opponents onto the back foot in defense.
“The girls really played some really good rugby, I told the team the team they played good rugby, compared to Dubai and Cape town.
Walker believes that if the team can maintain this level of performance, they have the potential to defeat any team in the world.
“Some key take aways from Singapore, the team starts to attack forward and get the teams to go backwards on defence, and as we know as Fiji rugby if we get that right we can beat any team in the world.”
The Fijiana team will take on the USA at 2.30pm Saturday, they then meet New Zealand at 5.58pm before facing Japan at 8.52pm.
The women’s cup semi-finals are at 4.13pm Sunday with the cup final later that evening at 8.28pm.
