The partnership between the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has strengthened significantly in the past year, with Waitangi Day offering a chance to celebrate the enduring cultural and professional ties rooted in our shared history of service.
A recent illustration of this commitment was the NZDF’s commissioning of the reprinting of The History of the RFMF 1939-1945. This reprint, presented by New Zealand Chief of Defence Force Air Marshal Tony Davies to Commander RFMF Major General Jone Kalouniwai, symbolises the enduring respect and friendship between the two forces. Originally authored by Lieutenant R.A. Howlett, an NZDF officer who served with the 1st Battalion, Fiji Infantry Regiment, this book recounts the wartime experiences of soldiers from both nations.
The historical ties between our two forces continues today with the NZDF Mutual Assistance Program. Established in 1973, this personnel exchange program is designed to foster shared experiences, enhance interoperability, and facilitate the development of personnel. It includes promotional courses, trade training, and opportunities for higher education, consistently promoting the growth and collaboration of both NZDF and RFMF personnel.
Additionally, the NZDF has been honoured to partner with the RFMF through the Veiliutaki Leadership Framework, reflecting a shared commitment to values-based, culturally grounded leadership. This partnership supports Fiji-led leadership development that strengthens integrity, competence, and trust across the RFMF in an increasingly complex security environment.
Recently Air Marshal Davies and Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, ceremoniously turned soil for the new RFMF Veiliutaki Centre, a dedicated facility for developing the next generation of Fijian leaders. This endeavour represents a commitment to a vision of a Pacific Leadership Development Centre designed to bolster leadership and cooperation in the region.
As we celebrate the accomplishments of both forces, the year ahead looks promising. We will build on established initiatives like the NZDF Mutual Assistance Program and the Veiliutaki Leadership Framework while looking forward to new initiatives and opportunities to strengthen the deep cultural ties between the NZDF and RFMF. Together, we are committed to fostering a safe, secure, and prosperous Pacific.
