Children as young as 4 raped by fathers and grandfathers

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) in Fiji released consolidated statistics for 2025 covering January 1 to December 31 on formal indictments filed in the High Courts for serious sexual offences, particularly focusing on rape and related crimes.

Key highlights from the ODPP media update include 63 offences that occurred in domestic relationships or where the accused was known to the victims.

These cases underscore the prevalent issue of sexual violence within families, villages, or close-knit communities in Fiji.

Shocking cases involving very young individuals were highlighted.

The youngest accused person was a 12-year-old boy, charged with the rape of his 6-year-old cousin.

In a separate case, a 13-year-old boy was charged with the rape of a 5-year-old girl from his village.

The youngest victim was a 4-year-old girl, allegedly raped by her 53-year-old father.

Another case involved a 5-year-old girl who was allegedly raped by her 74-year-old grandfather.

There were 126 indictments filed in the High Court with a total of 252 counts of serious sexual offences as of 31 December 2025.

There were 141 people charged with the 252 counts of sexual offences.

Of the 141 accused persons, 20 were juveniles (Under 18).

The offences were rape (174), attempted rape (2), aiding and abetting rape (3), incest by a relative (1), act with intent to commit rape (1), indecent assault (11), defilement (4) and sexual assault (56).

There were 135 victims of whom 79 victims were under the age of 18 years.

Of the135 victims, 120 were females and 15 were male victims.
