IAMPELA Papena has come a long way from the gardens of Kugmumb village in Papua New Guinea’s Western Highlands Province.

The 19-year-old University of Papua New Guinea economics student will represent her country at the upcoming Miss Pacific Islands Pageant, bringing with her a deep connection to her roots and a passionate commitment to advocacy.

Miss Papena, the sixth of seven children from mixed Western Highlands and Enga Province parentage, was born in Kugmumb village but spent most of her life in Port Moresby.

Despite living in the capital, she maintains strong ties to her village, regularly returning during school holidays to spend time with family.

“I am honoured to represent my people in the Pacific Pageant and hope to inspire the youth and to continue advocating for the rights of women, children and people with special needs,” Ms Papena said.

Entering into her third year of studies, Ms Papena started her journey to the regional pageant during a school break when she represented her district.

She then went on to represent her province and won the Miss Bird of Paradise title.

Ms Papena lists gardening as one of her therapeutic hobbies, saying it taught her valuable life lessons.

“I love the way the soil feels in the palm of my hands and the satisfaction of seeing a seedling grow into a strong plant,” she said.

“Gardening taught me the importance of patience and that good things always take time.”

When it comes to food, Ms Papena’s favourites are traditional Highlands dishes — the Mumu and Tolai aigir.

“Both are delicacies of Papua New Guinea,” she said proudly.

Ms Papena enjoys watching documentaries about other cultures and people, which she says fuels her curiosity to travel and explore the world.

She views the Miss Bird of Paradise title as carrying significant responsibility.

“The title comes with service and responsibility to carry my people and land with grace and humility,” Ms Papena said.

The Miss Pacific Islands Pageant celebrates cultural heritage, traditional knowledge and leadership among young Pacific women.
