A severe thunderstorm warning for heavy rainfall is now in force for parts of Viti Levu and the eastern half of Vanua Levu, with authorities warning of possible flash flooding in the next few hours.
Affected areas include the northeastern parts of Viti Levu, from Ra–Rakiraki through Tailevu North to Nasinu, Nausori and Naitasiri, as well as the eastern half of Vanua Levu, from Labasa to Udu Point, Wailevu through Savusavu to Saqani, including Natewa.
According to the Fiji Meteorological Service a trough lying near the Fiji group is bringing unstable weather conditions.
As a result, afternoon and evening thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rainfall are expected over the warned areas.
The weather office says the severe thunderstorms may produce intense rainfall capable of causing flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas, particularly during the next few hours.
Members of the public are advised to take precautionary measures, including keeping clear of flooded creeks and drains, avoiding walking, cycling or driving through floodwaters, unplugging electrical appliances, and staying indoors away from windows.
Parents are also urged to keep children indoors and to remain vigilant by closely monitoring weather conditions.
Thunderstorm activity, including heavy rain and intense lightning, is expected to persist until late afternoon or evening.
However, officials caution that due to the hit-and-miss nature of thunderstorms, not all areas may be affected, and impacts may vary from place to place.
