THE Flame Tree Colo-i-Suva rugby team, representing the district of Vuna, is preparing to make its debut at the upcoming Hamilton Fijian 7s tournament in New Zealand, marking a significant milestone for the mostly village-based squad.

Manager Laisiasa Kubu shared insights into the team’s journey and aspirations ahead of their departure next week.

“This tour is a part of the long-term development of our club,” Kubu explained.

“Most of these young players are villagers who have nurtured their talent through local rugby sevens and district competitions. This opportunity to play overseas is the first of its kind for many of them, with only two players coming from the senior Naitasiri team who are part of our Vuna club.”

For the players this tournament will be a memorable one, marking their first ever overseas trip.

“Most of these boys have never been on a plane before. It’s like baptism by fire for them,” the manager remarked on the excitement and high morale within the squad.

The players have been training intensively since November following their local sevens series in preparation for the challenge ahead.

Beyond competition, the tour is viewed as a valuable platform for exposure.

“The Hamilton tournament will have rugby scouts on the ground. It’s a chance for these young players to showcase their skills and potentially open doors to professional opportunities overseas.”

Drawing on past experiences, he recounted how the head coach previously took an AFL Fiji team to Australia, where several players secured positions through similar exposure.

He added that rugby has become a vital tool for community development and youth engagement in the district.

The team’s expectations for the tournament are clear with a primary focus on exposure while opening the door for players to display their rugby talents for scouts attending the competition.

Supported by former club members now residing in New Zealand, local businesses, and the community, the team will proudly carry the Flame Tree banner to Hamilton, symbolising hope and opportunity for their village and beyond
