Nakorovou, Rewa couple Onisimo Rakanace and Seini Toga are among the first private individuals to buy into shares of Shreedhar Motors Limited during its initial public offering period that closes next month.

Ms Toga said they made the move to invest with the future of their family and their children being their greatest motivation.

She said they had learnt about investing in the stock market during an awareness session at their village, facilitated by the South Pacific Stock Exchange (SPX).

“This is our first investment. For us, it’s just something that will help our children in the future. We are just investing for us to be financially stable for our children in the future,” Ms Toga said in an interview.

Mr Rakanace said this was a start for them as they planned to expand their investment basket and to also work on getting their children into learning about investment and getting them to invest as well.

Ms Toga said most people, particularly in the iTaukei community, do not pay much attention to investing.

“For us, we hold ourselves back in trying to venture out into something new financially. For us to invest in something financially is like, we take a long pause and we wait and look. If it works, then we take a step.

“But for investment, there is always a return. Maybe it will work, it will come in the long run, there will always be a return. So that’s the thing, we have to keep in mind – the return will come back. You invest in something, it will come back to you.”
