The Fiji Meteorological Service says Tropical Disturbance TD08F, located near American Samoa, has a low chance of developing into a tropical cyclone over the next 24 to 48 hours.
In its latest Tropical Disturbance Summary, the position of the system was assessed as fair, based on Himawari-9 visible satellite imagery, animation and peripheral surface observations.
TD08F is slow moving, with convection developing to the northeast of the low-level circulation centre, though overall organisation remains poor.
The Weather Office said the cyclonic circulation extends up to 600 hectopascals, with the system currently lying in a low upper-level divergent environment and experiencing low to moderate wind shear.
Sea surface temperatures in the area are around 29 degrees Celsius.
Global weather models indicate the system is likely to move southeastwards with little intensification.
“The potential for this system to develop into a tropical cyclone in the next 24 to 48 hours is low,” RSMC Nadi said.
The Fiji Meteorological Service will continue to monitor TD08F and provide updates should the system show signs of further development.
