A medical report has recommended that former Fiji Corrections Service officer Epeli Laqeni, facing a murder charge, receive treatment to help him regain his ability to walk.

His lawyer Timoci Varinava said he would file a fresh bail application citing the change in circumstances.

Prosecutor Naazish Ali said the recommendation is based on document review and not on physical examination. The court was told that Fiji Corrections Service staff at the remand centre have observed Mr Laqeni standing, with his legs reportedly fully healed. But Mr Varinava maintained that while he could stand, his client still could not walk.

Both parties were given copies of a report on living conditions at the remand centre from by the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission.

The report noted overcrowding in the infirmary, forcing Mr Laqeni to sleep on the floor, but it also confirmed that bathrooms and toilets are in good condition.

The case is adjourned to February 10.
