Blocked culverts and drains near the Raiwaqa Market in Suva are causing headaches for vendors and residents, with a foul stench permeating the air around the area.

Resident Marisia Vusonilawa said the rubbish has been uncleared for weeks.

“This culvert sits behind the market, and the drain runs right down to the Wailea squatter area, so when it rains, the water returns to the grounds and even the bottom flat of the Catholic Church hall,” she said.

“We have complained and called the Suva City Council to come and clear the rubbish, but nothing has been done. This is the first time for rubbish to be piled up in the culvert. It happens every year, and when it rains, it’s worse.”

“The vendors get affected by the smell and sometimes we can smell it from the main road. It will be good for the council to clean up this area for our own good health.”
