The Fiji National University Council will escalate complaints against Vice-Chancellor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba to police and FICAC after a request for a meeting with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka remains unanswered.
Council chairman Semesa Karavaki said the move followed a meeting last week where files on the allegations were finalised for submission.
“There are two allegations made against Mrs Baba that needs police and FICAC investigations,” he said.
“The council stands with the law. I mean, we should be a nation of law-abiding people.
“We are looking into the allegations of mismanagement and all these things happening in the university, it’s about time we do this to protect the integrity of the university.”
Mr Karavaki said the council would brief the Prime Minister on his return from New Zealand, but noted that questions sent to him remain unanswered.
He stressed the council, which holds overall governance of FNU, is acting to safeguard the university’s integrity.
Last week, Mr Rabuka ordered the reassignment of the FNU from the Ministry of Education to the Office of the Prime Minister, much to the surprise of the council, with Mr Karavaki describing the move as a takeover.
Mr Rabuka did not respond to questions on whether he would meet with the council or whether the PM’s Office would act on complaints against Mrs Nabobo-Baba.
The council had also asked the PM for an independent probe into the operations of the FNU, as a result of what it claimed as numerous complaints it received.
