WESTPAC Fiji recently announced the retirement of long-serving staff Angeline Ram after 54 years at the bank. Ms Ram joined the Bank of New South Wales (now Westpac Fiji) as an 18-year-old in the Ledger Department straight out of St Joseph’s Secondary School and rose quickly through the ranks to take on senior leadership roles in the bank’s International Banking, Trade Finance and Foreign Exchange departments.

She became the first woman appointed manager International Operations for the Pacific in 1989, paving the way for future generations of Pacific women in banking, Westpac Fiji said in a statement.

“Angie’s dedication, expertise and leadership have shaped Pacific banking for more than five decades,” Westpac Fiji chief executive officer Shane Smith said.

“She is trusted, respected and known for her integrity and commitment to doing what is right.

“Her legacy will continue through the many leaders she has mentored over the years.

“For those who have worked alongside her and had the privilege to call her a friend, Angie is far more than a respected banking leader. She is a steady presence in moments of uncertainty, a trusted adviser whose guidance is sought and valued, and a quiet force whose influence has shaped banking in the Pacific.”

Reflecting on her career, Ms Ram, now 72, said she leaves with gratitude.

“In my career, I have always tried my best to go the extra mile and, when I need to, have even challenged the status quo.

“You could say that I embody our Westpac ‘Speak Up’ culture very well.

“I feel that this is the right time for me to move forward with my life and step into the next chapter, enjoying time with my husband, with whom I recently celebrated the milestone of 50 years of marriage,” Ms Ram said.

“Westpac has not just been the source of my livelihood but has been like an extended family.

“I am thankful for the opportunities I’ve had and for the support from my own family throughout the long days and challenging periods. I retire knowing I gave my very best.”

Across her career, Ms Ram supported major transformation initiatives, strengthened governance frameworks, delivered regional system upgrades, led complex operational change, and represented Westpac across numerous Pacific markets.

She also served as a mentor to emerging leaders, generously sharing her knowledge and experience.

Her final working day was Thursday January 22, 2026.
