Youths found disrespecting the Sabeto Village regulations and drinking alcohol on Sundays would be disciplined.
Village headman Joseva Naikovea said a moku vakavanua (traditional spanking) would be carried out if villagers disobeyed the laws set by the vanua o Betoraurau.
“Every village has a youth group, but it has not been effective because some of these youths have been taking drugs, and especially drinking kava,” he said.
“Some of them staying in the village, their lives are sorely dependent on the consumption of kava.
“If a person is caught with drugs we go straight to their house and warn them and hand them to police.
Meanwhile, Mr Naikovea said the villagers were still following the strict regulations implemented last year to safeguard the children and youth.
This includes a signboard at the village entrance which reads:
q Children and students are not allowed to move around inside the village after 9pm;
q All entrances or gates to the village shall be closed after 10pm.
