THE Fiji Agromarketing Grassroots 7s kicks off this morning at the Bula Central College ground, marking another significant milestone in bringing rugby closer to communities in rural and remote parts of the country.

Tournament organisers were required to re-do the draws upon their arrival in Bua yesterday morning after several local teams were unable to complete online registration due to connectivity challenges in their remote locations.

The adjustment ensured that no team was left out, staying true to the spirit of inclusivity that underpins the Grassroots Fiji 7s Series.

The Bua leg has drawn strong local participation, with around 95 per cent of the teams coming from within the Bua Province.

Teams have also travelled from Taveuni and the Natewa–Tunuloa area, while only four teams across all grades have made the journey from Suva—highlighting the community-based nature of the tournament.

Fiji Sports Council Chief Executive Officer Gilbert Vakalalabure said the situation perfectly reflects the core objective of the Grassroots Fiji 7s Series.

“This is exactly what the grassroots series is about taking 7s rugby to the doorsteps of our people,” Vakalalabure said. “We understand the realities faced by teams in rural areas, and we want to make sure rugby remains accessible to everyone, regardless of location.”

Vakalalabure also acknowledged and thanked Fiji Agromarketing for its support as the naming sponsor of the Bua leg, saying partnerships like this play a vital role in sustaining grassroots sports development around the country.

Following the Bua tournament, attention will turn to the Vatulele Grassroots Fiji 7s, scheduled for February 20 and 21 at Lawaqa Park, as the series continues its mission of unearthing talent and strengthening community rugby across Fiji.
