Labasa businesswoman Amelia Simmons has called on the business community in the Northern Division to plan ahead of the six weeks closure of the Labasa Airport.
She said it was understandable that upgrade works had to be carried out on the airport infrastructure to ensure the safety of the travelling public.
“I understand this has to be done,” Ms Simmons said.
“Safety comes first in ensuring the runway can support ATR 72 aircrafts,” she said.
Ms Simmons said businesses should plan ahead of the six-week closure.
Late last year, Fiji Airports personnel had held consultations with stakeholders in the North, including the Commissioner Northern’s office, Labasa Chamber of Commerce, businesses in Labasa and the Savusavu Tourism Association.
Ms Simmons said she was also part of the consultation.
The Labasa Airport will be temporarily closed from February 16 to March 27 this year to allow major runway strengthening works.
