THE constant evolution of our Fijian flair and clinical finishes will be the key for Fiji Airways Fiji men’s sevens team to elevate their performance in the second leg of the HSBC SVNS series in Singapore.

“We just want to sharpen up, especially in what we are good at—our flair. It’s something we are training every day. When you come to our training, you see a lot of drills we are doing, just sharpening all our passing, especially our offloads,” he explained.

“We also want to ensure we are not playing one-dimensional rugby, where we just chain pass to the end and someone tries to break. We want to make sure we are playing as a team. We have patterns that the boys need to follow and make sure we understand the lines we need to run and the support lines.”

Fiji’s trademark attacking flair has given them an edge since the inception of the game, but with most teams catching on, Kolinisau believes being clinical in all aspects of their game will give them an advantage over the competition.

“We’re not going to stop the Fijian flair—that is something that makes Fiji different from every other team,” he said.

“Teams are catching up and we just need to be better; make sure we’re disciplined and take our opportunities when it matters most.”

Meanwhile, former Fiji Sevens representative Sireli Bobo has urged the players to step up ahead of the second leg of the HSBC SVNS series.

“I think Kolinisau has done a really good job with the national sevens team. The onus is now on the players to step up and put Kolinisau’s plan into action,” he said.

As the second leg approaches, Bobo believes defence will be the main focus for Fiji when the competition resumes.

“Defence is something the team really needs to work on, and I know Oscar has already planned for that. But the responsibility now lies with the players,” he said.

“Kolinisau won’t be out there making the tackles—the boys need to put his plan into action and trust his strategy.”

The Singapore 7s is scheduled to be played from next Saturday.

The Fiji men’s side is pooled with South Africa, Great Britain and Spain. The Fijiana side faces Australia, Japan and USA in pool play.
