The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for heavy rainfall, now in force for interior and southern parts of Viti Levu and southeastern parts of Vanua Levu.

The warning covers areas from Korolevu, Interior Ba, Interior Nadroga-Navosa, Sigatoka through the Coral Coast, and Interior Serua-Namosi, as well as southeastern parts of Vanua Levu including Southern Bua and Cakaudrove.

“A northerly wind flow prevails over Fiji, bringing unstable weather conditions,” the weather office said.

“Afternoon and evening thunderstorms are expected, with heavy rainfall likely over the warned areas.”

Fiji Met warned that the severe thunderstorms could produce intense rainfall, increasing the risk of flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas over the next few hours.

Members of the public are advised to keep clear of flooded creeks and drains, avoid walking, cycling or driving through floodwaters, unplug electrical appliances, stay indoors away from windows, keep children inside, and remain vigilant by closely monitoring weather conditions.

The Fiji Meteorological Service said thunderstorm activity and associated heavy rainfall are expected to continue through the afternoon and evening, and urged residents in affected areas to take all necessary precautions.
