Some community structures and improvements have been identified as encroaching into the project boundary of the Nasinu Public Cemetery, as construction begins on Phase 3 of the cemetery upgrade.

In a public notice, the Fiji Corrections Service confirmed that construction works officially commenced on January 13, 2026, in accordance with an executed construction contract.

The issue of encroachment was identified following a site inspection and advice received from the contractor on January 14.

According to the notice, observations on site show that some community-built structures and improvements extend into the designated project boundary in certain areas, potentially affecting the progress of construction works.

The Fiji Corrections Service said the notice is intended to formally inform members of the public who may have built accommodations or carried out activities within the affected areas before construction began.

In addition to the encroachment issue, parts of the project site are also currently being used for farming and cultivated vegetation.

Authorities have been requested to engage with affected communities to advise them that construction is underway and to issue notices for the removal of crops and structures where necessary.

The Service acknowledged that the works may cause inconvenience to some residents but stressed that the cemetery expansion is being undertaken to meet growing public needs.

17.000 new burial lots will be developed during this expansion.
