A Chinese national, who had pleaded guilty to possession of property suspected of being proceeds of crime, has been jailed for 10 months.

Yin Qing Qing was sentenced by Senior Magistrate Sufia Hamza in Suva yesterday.

She was jointly charged with Joshua Ravula for the offence committed in September last year.

But the State withdrew an initial charge of possession of illicit drugs, leaving Mr Ravula solely charged with the alleged possession of 42.95 grams of methamphetamine.

Ms Hamza ruled that there was no compelling reason to suspend the sentence and did not make orders for costs.

The case of seven individuals, including an alleged illegal immigrant, linked to the discovery of methamphetamine during a series of raids in Suva, remain alive before the Suva court.

Meanwhile, a 17-year-old accused of poking a girl with the handle of a cane knife has been convicted by the High Court in Labasa.

Records show the juvenile and the victim were in the same form at college when the incident occurred on February 22, 2024.

According to documents, the last lesson of the day was an agricultural practical class. Around 3.30pm, the lesson ended, and the students, including the boy and the victim, were tasked with returning these tools to the tool room.

As the tool room was elevated, the victim had to step up to enter the room and that was when the accused committed the offence.

A teacher who witnessed the incident then reported the matter.

Justice Lee James Burney said this act had some element of indecency in that any right-minded person would consider such conduct indecent in nature. The court found the juvenile not plead guilty to rape but guilty to indecent assault.
