The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for heavy rainfall, now in force for interior and southern parts of Viti Levu and southeastern parts of Vanua Levu.

The warning covers interior and southern areas of Viti Levu from Sigatoka through the Coral Coast to Navua, as well as southeastern parts of Vanua Levu, including southern Bua and Cakaudrove.

According to Fiji Met, a northerly wind flow is currently affecting the country, creating unstable atmospheric conditions.

“A northerly wind flow is affecting Fiji, creating unstable weather conditions,” the weather office said.

“Afternoon and evening thunderstorms are expected, bringing heavy rainfall over the warned areas.”

Fiji Met warned that the severe thunderstorms could produce intense rainfall, increasing the risk of flash flooding, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas over the next few hours.

“Severe thunderstorms may produce intense rainfall, which could lead to flash flooding in vulnerable areas,” the statement said.

The public has also been advised to remain indoors where possible, stay away from windows, keep children inside, and closely monitor weather updates.

Fiji Met said thunderstorm activity and associated heavy rainfall are expected to continue until late afternoon or evening, and people living in affected areas should remain vigilant as conditions may change rapidly.
