Fiji National University (FNU) Vice-Chancellor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba has confirmed that the university’s transition to operate under the Office of the Prime Minister within the Ministry of Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics was initiated at the request of the university itself.

In her weekly message to FNU staff and students, Professor Nabobo-Baba said the move was the result of careful consideration and long-term planning, rejecting suggestions that the change was imposed.

“I would like to clearly state that this move was requested by the University,” she said.

“Our first formal discussion on this reassignment took place on 10 August 2024. This is not a takeover. It is a considered request made by FNU after careful thought and planning.”

She said the decision to shift from the Ministry of Education reflected FNU’s expanding national role and responsibilities.

“We requested to move from the Ministry of Education to the Office of the Prime Minister because of the University’s national role and growing responsibilities,” Professor Nabobo-Baba said.

She thanked Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and the Ministry of Strategic Planning for supporting the transition.

“We are thankful to the Honourable Prime Minister and the Ministry of Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics for supporting this request and for working closely with us to make this transition possible,” she said.

Professor Nabobo-Baba also acknowledged the role of the FNU Council, its chair, deputy chair and members for their support throughout the process.
