The murder trial of Alivereti Lesukiyasawa, who is accused of the death of Joseph Johnson three years ago, has been deferred.

Mr Lesukiyasawa faces one charge of murder in connection with the death of Joseph Johnson on February 19, 2022.

He is believed to have been heavily intoxicated when he allegedly killed Mr Johnson on Lautoka’s Evan Street, where the body was discovered.

Mr Lesukiyasawa appeared before High Court judge Justice Sunil Sharma at the High Court in Lautoka this morning.

Justice Sharma said that while the trial was originally scheduled to begin on February 9, it would no longer proceed on that date due to a judiciary workshop taking place that week.

The court heard that the trial will now start on February 17.

State counsel Laisiasa Baleilevuka told the court that the State is relying on Mr Lesukiyasawa’s admissions made during his caution interview.

The defense stated they were ready for trial and had no objections to the State’s submissions.

Justice Sharma  adjourned the matter to February 17.
