Opposition MP Premila Kumar has questioned the Prime Minister’s decision to take direct control of a national educational institution, warning that the move raises concerns about governance, accountability and political interference.

In a statement, Kumar said educational institutions should remain independent and professionally managed, and not be subject to direct political control.

“Education is too important to be politicised,” Ms Kumar said, adding that any intervention by the Prime Minister must be clearly justified and time-bound.

She said while reform may be necessary in some cases, bypassing established governance structures sets a dangerous precedent.

“If there are governance or performance issues, they should be addressed through transparent processes, not through executive takeover.”

Kumar also questioned why the relevant line ministry and statutory boards were not allowed to carry out their oversight responsibilities.

“The public deserves clarity on what went wrong, who is responsible, and why existing accountability mechanisms were deemed insufficient,” she said.

She called on the Government to release full details of the decision, including the legal basis, duration of the takeover, and the specific objectives it seeks to achieve.

Kumar said confidence in Fiji’s education sector depends on stability, independence and respect for institutional autonomy, particularly at a time when the country is working to rebuild trust in public institutions.

The Opposition MP urged the Government to reconsider the move and ensure that any reforms are conducted in a manner consistent with democratic principles and good governance.
