Fiji has officially established a Local Government Register of Voters to manage municipal elections, effective December 24, 2025.

The Electoral (Local Government Elections) Regulations 2025, which came into force on last Christmas eve, create a dedicated framework for voter registration in municipal elections across Fiji.

Under the new regulations, the Fijian Elections Office (FEO) will maintain the Local Government Register, recording each voter’s full name, date of birth, residential address, municipality and ward. The register may operate alongside the National Register of Voters or as a separate database at the discretion of the Supervisor of Elections.

The regulations require the supervisor to call for voter registration at least once a year. Notices must be published on the FEO website, across media platforms, and displayed in municipal locations, inviting qualified but unregistered individuals to apply.

Applications must include verified personal details, a voter card number, and a declaration of accuracy. The supervisor may conduct eligibility checks and reject incomplete or non-compliant applications.

Approved voters will have their names entered into the register and receive confirmation along with details of their designated polling venue.

The new system aims to streamline municipal election processes and ensure a comprehensive, up-to-date voter register for local governance across Fiji.
