OVER $36,433 has been invested by the Government to improve rural access with the completion of the Sawani footcrossing project in Naitasiri.
The project was officially handed over to Sawani Village by the outgoing Minister for Rural and Maritime Development Sakiasi Ditoka who said the new footcrossing would play a key role in improving transportation access and community preparedness, particularly during natural disasters.
“This initiative further demonstrates the strong connection and co-operation between the three pillars of our society, the church, the vanua, and the government which we witness clearly today,” Mr Ditoka said.
“This new footcrossing will assist households within the yavusa and make movement easier for villagers, especially women, children, the elderly, and persons living with disabilities.
“The project has been successfully completed within your yavusa. It will benefit 349 villagers across 60 households.”
Mr Ditoka added the ministry continues to actively engage with rural communities to identify key development priorities.
He said the focus was on responding to community needs and strengthening the effectiveness of Government programs through strong village leadership.
“The Government remains committed and will not tire of pursuing initiatives such as this throughout our nation.”
