Division received more than $43,000 in grants from the Ministry of Sugar Industry as part of the ongoing New Farmer Assistance and Lease Premium Renewal programs.

In one of his last official engagement as Minister for Sugar Industry, Charan Jeath Singh said the grants provided a boost for new and struggling growers.

“This Government has made it clear. We are not in the business of shutting down sugar communities but we are the business of rebuilding them,” Mr Singh said. “This assistance under the New Farmer and Lease Premium Assistance Program is a key part of that commitment. “Nationally, this program has assisted 587 farmers with a total government investment of $2.7million. “Today, we add to that $43,479. Later this week in Labasa a further 16 farmers will receive grants amounting to $78,473.”

He said these grants are not just financial support but an investment.

“They help new farmers enter the sector, support lease renewals and ensure that productive land remains under cultivation.” Mr Singh also had some parting words for the industry.

“As I prepare to step away from direct responsibility for the sugar industry while continuing to serve as Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs, and now also taking on the Public Enterprises portfolio, I do so with mixed feelings. “I am sad to depart but I leave knowing that we have laid a strong foundation for the industry’s turnaround. “The systems are improving, relationships are stronger, farmer confidence is returning and the direction is clear.

“My support for the sugar industry will not end here.”
