FIJI’S Online Chess Team has made an impressive start in the 2025-2026 Global Chess League. The tournament features a competitive field of 744 players representing 65 chess clubs from around the world, including countries such as England, Australia, India, Armenia, Pakistan, Libya, Italy, China, Brazil, Iran, Ukraine, and Romania.
Led by captain Avinesh Nadan, Team Fiji accumulated a solid 92 points over the first three rounds, securing the 23rd position in this global event.
“The league is played in a challenging format of 5 minutes plus 2 seconds per move,” explained Candidate Master (CM) Goru Arvind.
“We have to compete in back-to-back matches for a full hour, which demands quick mental resets and consistent focus.”
Team Fiji’s top performers so far have been CM Arvind, who scored 55 points, and captain Avinesh Nadan with 37 points.
Their individual rankings are 39th and 78th respectively out of the 744 competitors.
Team Fiji’s strong start signals a promising future in international online chess competition, reflecting the nation’s growing presence in the global chess community.
