A CABINET minister has called on temple committees to spend money on security cameras instead of grog.

Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs Charan Jeath Singh made the call after a recent Hindu temple in the Western Division was vandalised and sacred idols damaged.

“This should be one of their priorities,” he said, noting that most temples do not have surveillance cameras.

“Instead of sitting down and complaining, they should invest in security equipment like cameras so that they can identify those who come in and vandalise temples or buildings.”

He said this would only happen if there was a change in attitude.

“People spend only about half an hour in actual prayer at the temple, but then sit around drinking grog for the next five hours.”

He said the money spent on grog during those five hours should instead be invested in the security of the temples.
