FIJI Airways Fiji Men’s Sevens head coach Osea Kolinisau has emphasised that selection will always be open to all players eligible to represent Fiji, regardless of where they are currently playing.
The national coach made these remarks following a successful scrimmage session against the British Army team on Tuesday at Albert Park, the majority of whom were Fijian British Army soldiers.
“My main message was to thank the boys for coming, especially the British Army players. The selection door is always open; I’m not limiting it just to those playing in Fiji. The management team and I are constantly on the lookout for new talent,” he explained.
Kolinisau added that players who prove themselves consistently at club or invitational tournaments worldwide could be just a phone call away from joining the national setup.
“I told them that if you are good enough, we might call you to join the camp and see if you have what it takes to represent your country,” he said.
The scrimmage was a tough and highly competitive encounter, with the British Army team relishing the rare opportunity to face off against a powerhouse of the abbreviated game.
Scoring two tries, the visitors exposed some vulnerabilities in the national side’s defensive structures.
“They scored two tries from our mistakes, and that is something we need to work on as a team,” he said.
Kolinisau praised the visiting British Army team for the fierce contest, highlighting the importance of exposing the team to different opposition.
