A flash flood warning remains in force for the entire Fiji group, according to the National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi at 5am today.

The warning comes as an active trough of low pressure, accompanied by widespread cloud and rain, continues to move slowly over the country.

Weather officials say a shallow low pressure system embedded along the trough, just west of Viti Levu, is directing moist north to northwest winds across most parts of Fiji.

This system is expected to bring periods of heavy rain, squally thunderstorms and strong winds through the weekend.

Authorities have warned that isolated heavy rainfall could lead to flash flooding, particularly in drainage systems, small streams, low-water bridges, Irish crossings, roads and properties in low-lying areas.

Tide information shows that in Lautoka, the high tide of 1.29 metres occurred at 4.43am and in Suva, high tide of 1.28 metres was recorded at 5.15am.

Members of the public are urged to remain alert and take necessary precautions.
